Welcome to Scripps Genomic Health Initiative
Become a member
Thank you for participating in the Scripps Genomic Health Initiative (SGHI). As part of this unique project, you will be helping Scripps scientists to develop a body of data that will continue to determine the links between specific genes and our susceptibility to a variety of diseases and conditions. We will also gain valuable insight on how learning more about your genetic susceptibility can help you make changes that may lead to prevention and aid in early diagnosis of disease.
With your participation in the Scripps Genomic Health Initiative you will receive:
- A scan of your whole genome, carried out by a government-certified laboratory that captures data on 1.8 million of your genetic markers.
- Information on you and your family’s ancestry and geographic origins, which will be available to you in 2009.
- An analysis of your genetic predisposition for a variety of health conditions and the information to know what steps you can take to prevent, delay, detect or diagnose them early.
- The following health conditions are included:
- abdominal aneurysm
- Alzheimer's disease
- atrial fibrillation
- brain aneurysm
- breast cancer
- celiac disease
- colon cancer
- Crohn's disease
- diabetes, type 2
- glaucoma
- Graves' disease
- heart attack
- lupus
- lung cancer
- macular degeneration
- multiple sclerosis
- obesity
- osteoarthritis
- prostate cancer
- psoriasis
- restless legs syndrome
- rheumatoid arthritis
- stomach cancer
- Updates for an entire year based on new insights into genetic risk, including new condition predispositions, new genetic markers, and other wellness strategies.
- A Navigenics personalized risk assessment, with your results available online by April 2009.
- A Microsoft® HealthVault™ account, where genetic risk results, survey results and related information will be stored and where additional information can be deposited by you.
To participate, you must:
- Be 18 years of age.
- Have a valid e-mail address for each order.
- Be a Scripps Health employee or member of the Scripps community (friends, patients, trustees).
- New York state residents are not eligible at this time.
- Countries eligible for this offer ar the US, Canada, Germany, UK and the Netherlands.

- Submit a small sample of your saliva**, from which your DNA will be extracted. A kit with materials and instructions on collecting and shipping your saliva sample to Navigenics will be sent directly to you.
*You will be asked about medications and health history, so you should have that information available. You should allow at least 30 minutes for enrollment.
**Samples must be submitted and postmarked by February 28, 2009.
