Genetic tests require a blood sample, and I'm squeamish about that.

Truth:

No blood test is required. Our test is based on the DNA found in saliva.

How do we look at your DNA?

Your DNA insights start with a saliva sample. To see which markers you have, we analyze your DNA to estimate your lifetime risk for common health conditions.

Sometimes, certain markers can be hard to read correctly, but Navigenics analyzes your DNA until we get the most complete answer possible with our services. That's not always the case with other personal genetic testing companies. Navigenics is committed to comprehensive and thorough genetic analysis.

As new science reveals more connections between genetic markers and health conditions or medications,  your genetic results are updated to include the most current information.

How do we know which genetic markers are connected with particular health risks and medication interactions? The concept behind the science is fairly straightforward. Take thousands of people with a medical condition or drug side effect, and thousands of similar people who do not have that concern. Compare their DNA and identify places where one version of a genetic marker is much more common among the affected people than the healthy people. Then we know those genetic markers are either on or close to DNA that increases the risk of that health issue.
