Working with your doctor
When you and your doctor examine your genetic test results alongside your family history, your medical history and your lifestyle, your health picture becomes even more complete. Your physician can help you pull all these pieces together into a comprehensive plan for better health.

Once you know your genetic predispositions, you may want to talk to your doctor about symptoms that you'd previously brushed aside. Increased genetic risks may also prompt your physician to take a more personal approach to tests and screenings. If you are at above-average risk for developing macular degeneration, for example, your doctor may choose to start screening you for this vision disorder earlier than standard guidelines recommend. If you are at increased risk for certain cancers, your physician may encourage more frequent monitoring and tests that can catch cancer at an early stage, when it is often easier to treat.
