Aaron
This Internet entrepreneur, eager to understand his own DNA, believes that staying healthy is really important to being happy.
For Aaron, the decision to learn more about his genetic history wasn’t motivated by concern about his risk of developing a particular condition. He was primarily interested in learning more about his overall health.
“I’ve always been interested in understanding how things work, at the root level. I want to know what causes something to happen. Being an engineer, when I found out I could take these tests through Navigenics and really understand more about my genetics -- I was fascinated and really wanted to do it.”
Aaron believes that genetic testing is ushering in a new era of more personalized and more effective medical treatment. He hopes that access to genetic information will allow him to focus only on the medical advice that applies to him.
“We hear a lot of different – and sometimes conflicting – opinions about how to take care of your heath. I’m very excited about a future in which I can receive only the most relevant information to me, based on my DNA. With these tests there will be an amazing amount of much smarter and more effective treatments. There are so many things that medicine can do better if they know enough about you to really target what they are doing.”
Aaron was also eager to learn more about the process of genetic testing. When he received his results, he was pleased to find out that his current program of diet and exercise was well-suited to maintaining his good health.
“I wondered what DNA tests would look like and wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s fascinating to see what I’m at low risk and high risk for. Luckily, the conditions I am genetically most likely to have an issue with – diabetes, heart attack and obesity – are things I’m already taking care of through nutrition and exercise.”
In the end, Aaron was able to learn more about his health and the interaction between genetics and disease. He also appreciated having the opportunity to be a pioneer in the age of genetic health care.
“I’m excited to be one of the first people to try it. I think in the future everyone will get this done. It will be as regular as going to see a doctor."
